Way down upon a Swanee River

Far, far away,

Dere’s wha my heart is turning ever,

Dere’s wha de old folks stay.

The Tall Tale Travelers R.V. group from OTOW recently camped at Stephen Foster Folk Culture State Park on the banks of the Suwanee River located north of Lake City, Florida.

Participating as Wagon Masters for the excursion, Rosie and Jim Lynam made the reservations and arrangements for the twelve couples in attendance. On Tuesday, a staff member in complete costume representing the mid 1800’s conducted a pre-arranged tour of the culture center.  She explained that each one of the expertly designed and animated dioramas depicted a scene from a popular Stephen Foster song.  The staff also provided live music and a sing-along featuring Florida’s State Song, Old Folks at Home.  The tour continued to the carillon tower, the craft center and gift shop.

Later that day, the campers enjoyed a “Super Soup and Salad Supper” as all members contributed for a delicious selection of homemade soups, salads, and desserts.

Reservations were also made for a buffet lunch at the historic Telford Hotel in White Springs.  The group dined in the original dining room, which was built in 1903, and were permitted to view the hotel’s antique pictures, artifacts, and furniture.

The Tall Tale Travelers were pleased to welcome three new couples into the group:  Carmen and Ed Dickinson, Bernadette and Steve Higgins, and Gloria and Nick Scicluna.  The group whole-heartedly recommends this state park to everyone, whether you are a camper or a day visitor.

Liz and Moe Campbell will conduct the next camping trip.  They have planned a four-night stay at Little Manatee River State Park on January 12 – 16, 2009.

The next scheduled meeting is set for Wednesday, January 21, 2009 at 6:30 PM in the Arbor Conference Center, room G.  A reminder that there is no scheduled meeting for December as all of the Tall Tale Travelers have their own plans to celebrate the holidays.  May you all have a Joyous and Happy Holiday Season!
